Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species and is grown primarily for its diverse industrial uses. It can be used to produce a number of commercial items such as paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.
Although the fibers from hemp can be used to make products that are 100% hemp, they are still commonly blended with other organic fibers that may include flax, cotton, or silk to make fabrics for clothing or furniture. It is the inner fibers of hemp that are more woody and course and are used for the production of mulch, animal bedding, and litter. When hemp is run through a drying system the hemp oil becomes solid and is then used for products such as oil-based paints, moisturizing creams, and plastics.
Hemp is also frequently used in the production building materials. Sometimes hemp is mixed with lime to create concrete-like blocks and used as insulating material for construction. The blocks are not very strong and usually need alternative support within the structure. Hemp fibers are much stronger and extremely durable. Often these hemp fibers are used in replacement of wood.
Biodiesel can be made from the oils in hemp seeds and stalks. Alcohol fuel is also used and is made by fermenting the entirety of the hemp plant.
Hemp is planted between the months of March and May and takes about three to four months to mature. There is a wide variety of hemp because of years and years of selective breeding for certain traits that different people wanted to select for. For example, some people wanted hemp that was suitable for warmer or cooler environments, or hemp that had good fiber quality. Many varieties of hemp are selected for the amount of oil and seeds that they yielded. It is all dependent on what the hemp will eventually be processed and used for.
Hemp can benefit from harvesting, rotary drying, size reducing, pelleting, cooling, and material handling. The ONIX Corporation’s processing systems can handle numerous materials and co-products that you may not know what to do with or want a better more effective way to process. We have the ability to work with materials such as, but not limited to, apple pomace, citrus pomace, sludge, alfalfa, bagasse, coffee grounds, sawdust, hemp and much more.
